Jeonju IFF to host Iran’s ‘Careless Crime’

The Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) in South Korea has been slated to show award-winning Iranian feature ‘Careless Crime’.

Shahram Mokri’s film will go on screen at the World Cinema section of the 22nd edition of the South Korean event.

According to the official website of the fest, this section “plays a pivotal role in introducing titles of all genres and titles from all over the world”. This year 18 films have been selected to be screened at this section.

Going back to forty years ago, the movie’s story starts during the uprising to overthrow the Shah’s regime in Iran.

Then, protestors set fire to movie theaters as a way of showing opposition to Western culture and burned down many cinemas.

In one tragic case, a theater was set on fire with four hundred people inside and most of them were burned alive.

Now in contemporary Iran, after forty years, four individuals decide to burn down a movie theater.

Produced by Negar Eskanadarfar and Karnameh Institute of Arts and Culture, the flick is starring Babak Karimi, Razieh Mansouri, and Abolfazl Kahani.

‘Careless Crime’ was premiered at the Orizzonti section of the 77th Venice Film Festival in Italy.

The film has so far taken part in various global events, including the Sharjah Film Platform in the UAE, the MedFilm Festival in Italy and the Tokyo FILMex International Film Festival in Japan.

The motto for the 22nd Jeonju IFF, which will kick off on April 29, is ‘Film Goes on’ which is an attempt to show how COVID-19 has impacted the filmmaking industry.

The 2021 edition of the fest will wrap up on May 8.
